چکیده

We apply a regularization method for the optical inversion of SAGE II aerosol extinction profiles and derive the particle number density N , the mode radius ρ and width σ of an effective lognormal aerosol size distribution. The constraint applied to the inversion scheme allows us to appreciably enhance the stability of the solution. Therefore, because of the disposal of a more stable inversion scheme and of the wide extend of SAGE II data in time and space, we were able to improve the estimation of the aerosol parameter profiles with respect to previous published retrievals and, hence, our knowledge of the aerosol distribution characteristics in space and time. After presenting the inversion method and retrieved profiles concerning the particle number density profile over the time period 1984–2000, we validate our results by means of data derived from both in situ and remote spectral measurements. We also discuss the limits of the comparison between the various types of measurements due to their respective particularities. The validation gives a satisfying agreement with other data sources for N and ρ as long as the mode radius is not too small compared to the shortest SAGE II wavelength, whereas σ appears to be less easily retrieved with a good accuracy.

Improved stratospheric aerosol extinction profiles from SCIAMACHY: validation and sample results

Stratospheric aerosol extinction profiles have been retrieved from SCIAMACHY/Envisat measurements of limb-scattered solar radiation. The retrieval is an improved version of an algorithm presented earlier. The retrieved aerosol extinction profiles are compared to co-located aerosol profile measurements from the SAGE II solar occultation instrument at a wavelength of 525 nm. Comparisons were carr...

Satellite Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement Validation

I The validity of the stratospheric aerosol measurements made by the satellite sensors SAM II and SAGE has been tested by comparing their results with each other and with results obtained by other techniques (lidar. dustsonde. filter. impactor). The latter type of comparison has required the development of special techniques that (1) convert the quantity measured by the correlative sensor (e.g....

Reevaluation of stratospheric ozone trends from SAGE II data using a simultaneous temporal and spatial analysis

This paper details a new method of regression for sparsely sampled data sets for use with time-series analysis, in particular the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment (SAGE) II ozone data set. Non-uniform spatial, temporal, and diurnal sampling present in the data set result in biased values for the long-term trend if not accounted for. This new method is performed close to the native resol...

Optimal eigenanalysis for the treatment of aerosols in the retrieval of atmospheric composition from transmission measurements.

The separation of the individual contributions of aerosol and gases to the total attenuation of radiation through the atmosphere has been the subject of much scientific investigation since remote sensing experiments first began. We describe a new scheme to account for the spectral variation of the aerosol extinction in the inversion of transmission data from occultation measurements. Because th...

Regularized inversion method for retrieval of aerosol particle size distribution function in W(1,2) space.

A determination of the aerosol particle size distribution function by using the particle spectrum extinction equation is an ill-posed integral equation of the first kind. To overcome this, we must incorporate regularization techniques. Most of the literature focuses on the Phillips-Twomey regularization or its variations. However, there are drawbacks for some applications in which the real aero...
